I'll Be In My Coffin For The Rest Of The Day

Oh holy hell am I tired.

I was scheduled to go in to work this morning at 6:00 am, sit on my ass for two hours, and then do halvsies all morning at the old codgers 4/8 game.

Luckily, things didn't quite work out that way. I was up late last night, having recorded a couple of episodes of Deadliest Catch and After The Catch, plus the last two hours of the 2007 WSOP Main Event final table. So I was a tv-watchin' fool until sometime after midnight. About that time I realized that I had to work at six in the morning, so I set my alarm for 4:40 am and turned off the light.

I swear I hadn't been lying there in the dark for more than twenty minutes when my phone started ringing. I didn't even have to look--I knew it was work calling. When they call that late at night, it's either to tell me to come to work early, or to reset my alarm clock and come in later.

This time, the voice on the other end of the phone said "Get down here as quickly as you can! I've got three games going and three dealers locked down." I said I'd be there within the hour. So the light came back on, I took a shower and shaved, got dressed, and broke a couple of speed laws between here and the casino.

There were still three games going when I got there, and much to my delight, two of them were no-limit games--The good kind of no-limit games, where everyone is on the tail end of their all-nighters, drunk, building up pots as a means to brag about the size of their peeners, or just trying to make back their losses from the blackjack tables.

Who benefits from all this drunken bravado? Well... I do!

The bigger the pots, the bigger the tips, so I love pushing those $200 pots around the table and dropping a few 'redbirds' in my pockets. Sure beats the hell out of the geriatric limp-fest I normally deal first thing in the morning. As the night wore on, the 4/8 game broke, and the two no-limit tables became one. All the other dealers had gone home, the last one leaving at 5:00 am, leaving me locked down in one no-limit game until the bitter end.

They finally called it a night around 6:00 or so, and in those four hours I made a big pile of tips. Once that table was closed down, I went and got some breakfast, then came back and waited around for the old guys to show up for their morning rehash of all their latest doctor visits.

We got the game going around 7:45 or so, and I managed to pull fifty bucks or so out of them before calling it a day at 9:30. Of course, on the way out the door, I realized that it was the 16th, and my insurance is due again, so I hustled down to the bank to deposit a few bucks to make sure the electronic debit was covered.

Those last two hours were pretty tough--I was yawning the whole time. But it was worth it--I had a pretty good day, moneywise, so I was in a much better mood today when I left work than I was back on Saturday. Now that I'm back home, I've got a tall cold icy drink on the nightstand, the AC cranked up, and the ceiling fan set to full combat power. And I'm going to spend the balance of the day like a vampire, locked away in my crypt, asleep.
