I can't explain it. Here it is 3:45 in the morning and I'm wide awake--an hour before my alarm is set to go off. Believe me when I tell you that I'd rather be sleeping, but since I'm up, I figure that I could at least have a post up for you die-hards first thing in the morning.
First of all, I'd forgotten to mention another cool thing that happened this past weekend. Not only did I reconnect with my old buddy Mark, but I also touched base with one of my best friends from days past, former roommate and Vegas compadre, Derek. If any of you remember reading my old Vegas adventures from before I moved here, Derek was one of the four amigos from Phoenix who I used to work with at Schwab (along with Eddie B and Ed W) and eventually we lived together for about a year.
Anyhow, we thought he'd fallen off the face of the earth, having moved to Austin several years back, and none of us had seen him since 2004. But he sent me an email telling me that he'd be in Vegas next month, and we talked on the phone on Sunday to iron out the details. So I called Eddie B, and he's gonna try and make it up here that weekend. Unfortunately, Ed W probably won't be able to join us, as his wife is about to have a baby any day now. But he'll be here in spirit. So I'm looking forward to that.
In the meantime, I don't have a whole lot going on. I'm working the next three days, and on Saturday I'm doing eight hours on swing shift, which like the menu at the Chinese restaurant says, is double happiness because not only is the money so much better, but I'll get to see Kimmy again for the first time in over two weeks.
I don't have another poker tournament on schedule at the moment, but I *may* play in one on Friday night down at Planet Hollywood. I'm also thinking of playing at the Orleans once or twice next week. I think I've found my comfort zone--any tournament that has half-hour blind levels, $3000-$4000 in starting chips, and costs between $60-$150 to get into, I'm cool with. And I prefer freeze-outs, too--I don't like seeing the same people coming back to the table, re-loaded, as soon as I knock them out. Yeah, I know it adds to the prize pool, but I still don't like it. In a pinch, I'll play in one with twenty-minute blinds, but fifteen minute blinds are an absolute no-no.
For the past few nights, I've been following the live updates online from the World Series Main Event, and now that Day Three is upon us, I'm completely bummed that Phil Helmuth, Mike Matusow, and Hevad Khan--the three biggest asshats in the poker world--are still alive. ESPN's coverage is gonna suck complete donkey balls now, given that all of them have been toiling away at the 'featured' table. I can't remember if the Sombrero of Asshats, Humberto Brenes, is still alive, but damn, I sure hope not. The players I like to watch--Doyle Brunson, Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu, Steve Dannenmann--they've all busted out. At least Gus Hansen and Jennifer Harmon are still alive, so I'll root for them.
Also, I'm not sure just yet, but I think my boss took 7th place in the WSOP Casino Employees event that I considered playing in. I'll find out in a couple of hours, but the honest truth is--I just don't know her last name (that whole Vegas phenomenon where nobody has a last name strikes again!). But seriously--how many women named Elaine got into the tourney? I'm guessing not that many... But this year's employee tourney wasn't nearly as juicy as last year--they had fewer players, and top prize was only like $89,000 this time around.
Anyhow, that's all for now. I've got to get up shortly, take a shower, and haul my carcass down to the casino. I'm hoping there's a game going on when I get there--I hate getting up this early in the morning and just sitting on my ass for a couple of hours listening to the floor guy whine about how much he hates living in Vegas.
Talk to ya later.
Mikey
