Waking Up Old

Good morning, everyone. I'm wide awake at 6:00 and making my way through a pot of coffee. It's pleasantly cool this morning, and I'm feeling very productive--I'll probably get a lot done today.

Anyhow, I was re-reading the post I made yesterday, and as a total self-critic, it made me cringe. Obviously, I was tired and hungover when I wrote it, as it didn't seem to flow and the points, if any were made, were all over the map. It was not my best effort, and I apologize, as it probably made your heads hurt to read it. I know that's what happened when I re-read it this morning. Good Lord, I'm so ashamed! Regardless, I want to thank everyone who sent along their best wishes and birthday greetings here, in my inbox, and over at T2V.

But because I was hungover/tired yesterday, besides writing that post, I didn't do a damn thing else but try and sleep all day. It was tough, because it was so hot in the house (we're still avoiding the urge to hit the A/C just yet), so by the time I got moving and went back to work, I was still feeling a bit worn out.

Because it was 1) my birthday 2) my 'Friday' and 3) I felt like a train wreck, I signed up for the early-out list as soon as I got to the casino. It was also completely dead that night, and any players we might have had at the table games were driven off my a horrible coffee-house reject duo who were sitting in the bar butchering adult-contemporary songs on the guitar and keyboard. So for a two-hour stretch of my shift, I didn't deal a single card--I just stood there at the table looking at all the pretty lights and daydreaming, wishing they'd let me wear earplugs.

When the boss finally came by to close the dead games, they asked a bunch of us if we'd like to just go home at 11:00 instead of waiting until 2:30 (like I'd signed up for--yes, we can request what time we'd like to go home). So I took the offer before they rescinded it, and hit the exit before any of the other floorpeople decided they needed me to stick around. (That's one unfortunate side effect of dealing all of the games--a lot of times they send the people home who only deal one or two games, and keep us 'experts' around till the bitter end).

So I was home, in bed, and asleep by 11:30. And the only reason I'm up now is because Eddie's alarm went off at 5:00 am. So I got up, used the facilities, made a pot of coffee, and helped him move the inflata-bed back out onto the patio, giving me a little space to move around in here in my room. We've decided that the inflata-bed is actually The Blob, as it seems to keep getting bigger. Not only can I *not* Spiderman my way around the end of it anymore (it's about five inches longer than it was when it was brand-new), it also doesn't fit through the bedroom door without lots of coaxing. Of course, we're much too lazy to just deflate it a bit--that'd be too easy. So every morning it's like watching the two Stooges try to push a liferaft out of a porthole. Sadly, we only get to perform that morning ritual a few more times, as he's heading back home to his wife and their king-sized bed on Friday afternoon. And he's taking The Blob with him.

Tonight is grilled meat and campfire night at Casa de Mikey. Instead of steaks, we're going with burgers and beer brats this time around. Rob still has a pack or two of Omaha Steaks burgers in his fridge, and we decided that steaks and all the collateral goodies were just too much work this week. So tonight, it's gonna be an easy one. Grilled brats, chips, and baked beans, washed down with a few bottles of good old American macro-brew. I envision a remake of that scene from Blazing Saddles as we sit around the campfire tonight. Yeah, you know the one I'm talking about.

Tomorrow night we have invitations to a wine tasting at Onda down at The Mirage. "An evening of fine South African wines" or some such thing is how they're billing it. I've never been to a wine tasting before, so it should be a new and interesting experience. Eddie has done it a time or two, so I'll just follow his lead. Regardless, I'm sure there's going to be some high comedy on display, and of course I'll make a full report.

In the meantime, I think I'm gonna go grab myself another cuppa coffee and settle in with my Tivo for a couple of hours before I start my chores.
